Ming and Qing Streets Picture

Ming and Qing Street is one of the ancient cultural heritages of China, and it is the main commercial street in Ping Yao, also called "South Street" or "Nan Da Jie".

Situated in the center of Shanxi Province, Ping Yao looks much the same today as it did during the period of Ming and Qing dynasties, when it was a bustling economic center of the feudal China. Becoming a major landscape in Pingyao, Ming and Qing Street is one of the ancient cultural heritages of China, and it is the main commercial street in Ping Yao, also called "South Street" or "Nan Da Jie". It can be reputed as the "Wall Street of China" in the past time, because it keeps the antique charm of Ming and Qing dynasties.

Since earlier in 19th century, it has served as the original gathering place for business people in Shanxi Province. Almost all kinds of trades took place along the street. It is divided into two parts by the City Building, the south street and the north street. The styles of the shops are unanimous but not duplicate. Today it has become the biggest antique market in Shanxi.

With several hundred meters it is flanked by 20-30 museums which resemble reflect the ancient cultures of the Ming and Qing dynasties. This ancient street is 440 meters long, running from north to south down the center of the city, directly between the City government building and the Cheng Huang temple. Here, many traditional shops of the Ming and Qing Dynasties are still well preserved. The south street extends about 750 meters, with 78 ancient shops along the street. It's lined with museums, shops, and hostels, yet still keeps its Ming - Qing dynasty style. The streets of Pingyao have many tall walls which are regarded as rich wealthy at that time. On the top of cross-street town house, you can take the panoramic of the Ming–Qing Street. When you walk along the street, you can get the true and special experience of ancient China. Although this old street has experienced a long history and bared wind and rain, it still reflects colorful ancient culture. So, it is waiting for people from all over the world to visit it.
