The glove puppet play and puppet-head carving of Zhangzhou are on the first list of China's Intangible Cultural Heritage. Zhangzhou was a place known for subtropical diseases in ancient times, and many of those who lived there led a hard life. The practice of worshipping supernatural beings, offering sacrifices to the heavens, and believing in witchcraft were very popular. Thus, the mysterious puppet play was well received among folk people. During the theatrical form’s golden age, audiences crowded into puppet theatres in all seasons and in all weather conditions.
