Today's highlight in Urumqi is an excursion to Heavenly Lake. Only an hour's drive from the city, it lies on snow-capped Mount Bogda at almost 2000 meters above sea level. The sapphire-blue lake is set in steep slopes of pine forests and meadows of wild flowers where Kazak nomads camp. The views from the cruise boat are breathtaking. In the evening you will board a short flight to Kashgar and transfer to the local best hotel.
No visitor to Kashgar should miss the Sunday Bazaar. In this teeming market, you can buy anything from herbal medicines to carpets, from a cradle to a camel. In the afternoon you will visit the town centre. A tour takes us from the vast Id Kah Mosque to the tomb of Abakh Khoja in the country lanes.
Kashgar is a fabled city with a rich mix of peoples and cultures. Mosques and veiled women make the city full of Middle Eastern flavour. In the morning you will visit a school, and then attend a workshop where you can learn how traditional Uyghur carpets are made. This morning is spent in the Nanshan Pastures where nomadic tribesmen herd their yaks and sheep. You will have the opportunity to visit a family in their tent for a taste of traditional nomadic hospitality. A short coach journey takes you through the desert to the Oasis town of Turpan, famous for its melons and vineyards. Here Marco Polo first encountered spaghetti, an idea he took home to Italy. Today's tour includes visits to the ruined city of Gaochang, and the underground tombs of Astana, the legendary Flaming Mountains, and Bezekli Caves whose walls are adorned with Buddhists frescoes. Dunhuang was a strategic post on the Silk Road and the frontier town during the ancient time. Jiayuguan Pass was built in the late Ming dynasty, about 600 years ago. It had served as a pass of strategic importance in the ancient "silk road" and an influential centre for cultural exchanges between the East and the West since ancient times. Jiayuguan Pass is one of the most representative parts of the Great Wall in the west of China. Check in the local best hotel tonight.
You will fly to Lanzhou, a city built on the banks of the Yellow River. A city tour takes us to the White Pagoda Hill with its many pavilions offering views of the Yellow River and the city below.
