Makaru Moutain

Makaru Mountain, Tibet Travel GuideThe fifth highest peak in Tibet, the Makaru Mountain is 8,463 meters above sea level and as the crow flies is 24 kilometers from Mt. Qomolangma. Its northern slope is in China while the southern slope is in Nepal. The mountain has five ridges, respectively classified as the northwest ridge, the southwest ridge, the northeast ridge, the southeast ridge and the north ridge. The peak on the north ridge is named Qomolanso (7816 meters high) and that on the northwest ridge, Makaru 2 (7640 meters). The peak on the southeast ridge is 8010 meters, a bit higher than others. The Weifeng Peak on the southeast ridge is the highest, being 8,010 meters above sea level. The valleys and slopes are covered with glaciers. Snow slides and icefalls make these cliffs a treacherous place.

The trip from New Tingri to Yupar Town via Parco is 120 kilometers. Going southward along the Ganma Zangbo Valley, you’ll need to take a yak from Yupar to the Shajitang mountaineering camp on the northeast foot of Makaru Mountain (elevation 3,600 meters).
