Anhui Province, also called "Wan" for short, is located in southeast China and covers an area of more than 130,000 square kilometers. Lying in the middle and lower valleys of the Yangtze River and Huaihe river, it borders Henan, Shandong, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Jiangxi and Hubei Provinces.

Climate

At the north of the Huaihe River, Anhui has a warm-temperature, semi-humid monsoonal climate, while the area south of the river has a sub-tropical, humid monsoonal climate. The mean annual temperature is 14C to 16C., with mean annual precipitation of 750-1,700 mm. More rain falls in the south than in the north and more in the hilly regions than in the plains

History and culture

Anhui is a province rich in cultural resources, and is the site of settlements from China's prehistoric past. A site containing ruins from 2,500,000 years ago was found in Renzi Cave in Fanchang County. The site of "He County ape-man," found in the "Longtan" Cave of He County, dates back to the Old Stone Age, 300,000 to 400,000 years ago.

People

The total population of Anhui is approximately 65.16 million, and Han people make up the vast majority of the population. The She and Hui nationalities are the two largest minorities groups.

Anhui Yellow Mountain, Anhui Travel GuideAnhui has an abundance of tourist attractions, beautiful natural scenery, and cultural sites. Huangshan (Yellow Mountain) and the ancient villages of Xidi Village and Hongcun Village in Yi County appear on the World Heritage List by UNESCO. Only two other places in China have more cultural sites on the UNESCO list than Anhui. Yellow Mountain is also listed as a World Nature site and a world Geological Park. Other key scenic spots are Jiuhua, Tianzhu, Langya, and Qiyun Mountains, Taiping Lake, and the Caishi, Chaohu and Xin'an Rivers. Three historical and cultural places of national importance in Anhui, are She County, Shou County and Bozhou. Five nature preservation zones are located in Anhui Province.
